Important monthly/yearly events
We have a number of events that occur monthly, yearly or bi-yearly. They normally occur during the same month each year. We are sure there are a number of them you will be interested in attending. We urge you to mark them down in your calendar and make time to look into further as they approach. More information will be available 60 to 90 days ahead of their actual start dates.
This list does not list all of the events but just some of the major ones. You can view all events on the calendar.
Mother's Day Epiphyllum Society show and sale
Mother's Day Epiphyllum Society show and sale celebrates the epiphyllum blooming season with a flower show and sale.
The sale is held both Saturday and Sunday while the show is only on Sunday afternoon. Saturday's sale gives individuals a chance to be among the first to purchase plants and cuttings. Sunday is the flower show and a continuation of the plant and cutting sale. If you are looking to add specific epis to your collection, you will want to come on Saturday for the best selection. Cuttings are always available on both Saturday and Sunday.
In any case you will not want to miss the wonderful flower displays on Sunday where a magnificent assortment blooms are on display. For more info . . .
Epi Photo Caravan
Epi Photo Caravan is an event where 4 to 5 of our members invite you to visit, view and take pictures of their Epiphyllum gardens. Because of the nature of this event and to ensure everyone has an opportunity to enjoy it, the number of people on the caravan is limited. The Photo Caravan is normally held on a Sunday in May. The caravan ends with everyone enjoying a dinner. The cost is usually around $20 and the events are normally sold out. For more info . . .
Safari Park Epiphyllum Trail maintenance
Care and maintenance of the Safari Park Epiphyllum Trail. Members normally get together twice a month to care for the epiphyllums.
You must be a San Diego Zoological Volunteer to be able to take part in this event.

There are lost of benefits besides the obvious one of helping to maintain is said to be the largest open to the public epiphyllum display in the world..
Safari Park Epiphyllum Sale
Safari Park Epiphyllum Sale is held on the first weekend in May from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the general area of the Safari Park Plant Trader.
Sales from this event go to benefit the Safari Park Epiphyllum Trail.
San Diego Epiphyllum Society meetings
San Diego Epiphyllum Society general meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. in the Balboa Park Casa Del Prado (room 101) on the 2nd Wednesday each month January through November. The December general meeting and workshop are replaced by an installation dinner where new SDES officers are installed.
General meetings starts with a short business meeting followed by an audio visual presentation on a subject deemed to be of interest to society members. This is followed by a raffle drawing for plants and cuttings. The meetings are designed to always have time to socialize and ask questions from our many friendly members about how they maintain their plants.
Prior to our general meeting there is a workshop at 7:00 p.m. in room 104. The workshop covers different topics related to the care of epiphyllums. If you are new to caring for epiphyllums you will find these to be a must attend function. If you are a veteran epiphyllum grower you will also find these an interesting place to hear ideas that have proven to be helpful to others.
San Diego Epiphyllum Society Board meetings
San Diego Epiphyllum Society Board meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday January through November the Balboa Park Casa Del Prado (room 104) at 6:00 p.m.
The December board meeting conflicts with the Christmas Dinner and therefore is normally held at a member's home where in addition to the general business overall goals for the coming year are discussed in a relaxed atmosphere.
Annual Photography contest and exhibit
This is a fun event that covers two meeting. Submission of photographs is accomplished at the start of the October meeting with judging conducted after the meeting. All photographs are display at the November meeting with special recognition to the winners.
This event allows photographs show off their favorite flowers and photographic talents the pictures entered do not have to be of your flowers however you just must be the photographer and a member of SDES. There are award categories so please read the rules carefully.
2019 is the first year of a new category Epi Art. The Epi Art category is designed to allow photographic artistic talent to be displayed with fewer constraints. It allows for unlimited manipulation of the photographs If it has an epiphyllum as the theme it most likely fits into the category For more info . . .
Epiphyllum Convention (Epi Con)
Epiphyllum Convention (Epi Con) is held in the spring time every other year.
In 2018 it was hosted by SDES and held at the San Diego Safari Park. The next Epi Con will be held in 2020 and hosted by the Epiphyllum Society of America (ESA) in Burbank California on May 2nd.
Much more information will be available on the ESA website as the date for Epi Con gets closer.
Epi Bash (SDES members end of summer party)
End of Summer Bash is a low key garden party held normally on a Saturday in October. It is where members meet on a small social scale getting to know new and old friends. The Epi Bash is just a get together to relax and share stories about anything. It is hosted at a member's home with the main course provided by SDES and side dishes or snacks provided by those attending.
It is one of the best times to socialize with other members. Once you have attended one it will be on your list of things you do not want to miss out on.

Installation & Holiday Banquet
This event is normally held on the 2nd Wednesday in December. We install our new officers, have a great social evening and a wonderful dinner.
The Banquet is discounted by SDES so that it is affordable for you and your spouse to enjoy a excellent holiday evening. For the past 10 years we have held this event at the Butcher Shop restaurant.
This is a sellout event so you will want to be thinking about attending early enough to get a place.
Cuyamaca Spring Garden Festival
Cuyamaca Spring Garden Festival has been holding this April event for over 20 years. See the calendar for this years date and location. It is a free family-friendly community celebration of spring and attracts around 3000 visitors from all over the county. The festival features fun programs, exhibitors and demonstrations designed to help you become a better gardener. It is sponsored by Cuyamaca College Ornamental Horticulture department. Which will be holding its biggest plant sale of the year.
